Steve Kravac & Hell's Half Acre Studio News | About | Blog | Upload Files | HEAR KITTY KITTY COMPLETING FULL LENGTH WITH STEVE May 12, 2016 Los Angeles based pop-punk act Hear Kitty Kitty have been on the scene for some time. The band features Cordell Crockett of Ugly Kid Joe and Kitty herself, who is a Danzig inspired bad-ass with a great voice. After years of demoing and re-writing the band has come up with a solid ten tunes that touch on Nirvana, Green Day and a cheekier Paramore. Mixes are underway now and the project is sounding amazing, drummer Luca D'Angelo nails this one to the floor and his snare tone on these recordings is so close to "Nevermind" that it's kinda uncanny. Look for more news on this great band in the near future cuz these guys are getting signed. LOUIS LINGG AND THE BOMBS RETURN FOR NEW L.P. MIXES FEB 12, 2016 The punk pride of Paris, France has come back to the Acre to have their new L.P. mixed. Louis Lingg and the Bombs' sound has shown plenty of growth since Steve last worked with them. New tracks are heavy on electronics and programming but the band's hardcore roots and pop sensibilities shine through. The first song we have up feels like Prodigy mixed with Black Flag and Paramore if you can believe that! We are super excited that the band chose to return to work at Hell's Half Acre. It's the best compliment we could ever ask for. A BUSY NEW YEAR BRINGS SPRING SPECIALS! JAN 14, 2016 The 2016 campaign has kicked off with a bang. These sessions will be to record Bradley's debut solo effort tentatively entitled "Summer Bliss and Autumn Tears," for Indie label Porterhouse Records. With a batch of twelve songs up for consideration the material runs a power pop gamut that recalls Matthew Sweet, Bob Mould, Sugar, Elvis Costello and Teenage Fanclub. Steve Kravac is producing and early committed contributors on the project include Mike Herrera of M.X.P.X., Jonny Two Bags of Social Distortion, Kevin Kane of Grapes of Wrath, Lou Dawson and Rachel Ashmore of Men Without Hats, Steve Soto of Adolecents, Bobby Adams of 7 Seconds, Wayne Kramer of the MC 5 and L.A. based guitartist Scrote (former-Stripminers). NEW ARRIVALS AT HELL'S HALF ACRE JUNE 10, 2015 A few more cool items have made their way into the arsenal up here on the mountain. One of the coolest is a vintage Premier 5 x 14 metal snare. This drum is booming and sounds deep and thick, just an all around great snare drum. We have also added an weighted 88 key controller to pair with our outstanding collection of sounds courtesy of I.K. Multimedia and their "Total Studio Package. "Additionally we have come into possession of a vintage YC-30 Yamaha electric organ, which is way gone! KIERAN STRANGE E.P. "LAST HERO STANDING" HITS STORES; FEATURES THREE CO-WRITES WITH STEVE! MAY 5, 2015 Vancouver based singer Kieran Strange released her sophomore E.P. this week and three of the four tracks are co-writes between Kieran and Steve. The two collaborated last fall and built the tunes that would eventually comprise the majoity this release. Equal parts aggressive, tender and epic Last Hero Standing" puts Kieran's amazing and evocative voice on full display. You can listen to the tunes right here, so do it already! MONTREAL'S ALT COUNTRY GODFATHERS THREE O'CLOCK TRAIN BEGIN NEW E.P. WITH STEVE AT THE ACRE. APRIL. 16, 2015 Long before alt-country was household word, Mack MacKenzie and his band Three O'Clock Train helped define the genre that would become a banner for that sound. With solid writing and heartfelt vocals the band made a name for themselves with quality releases and consistent touring throughout North America. Now Mack has teamed up with Steve to create 4 new versions of Train classics that will be released on an upcoming E.P. though Porterhouse Records. The idea is to recreate the songs with a nod to today's production techniques while keeping the original spark intact. Quite a challenge, but things are off to a good start. Look at the Hell's Half Acre Facebook page for updates on the sessions which will reconvene in July. GIBSON A-50 MANDOLIN HAS A FOREVER HOME IN HELL! MARCH 30, 2015 We are always seeking to improve our facility and the instruments we have available for our clients. With that in mind Hell's Half Acre has taken delivery of a circa 1950's Gibson A-50 Mandolin. Available for you on any session here, the instrument is completely original and possesses a rich tone that is bright and cutting as you would expect. It's spruce top and mahogany neck make it a great player that will add a whole other level of stringed tone to your recording! Welcome home little Gibbie! BLINK 182 "CHESHIRE CAT" HAS 20TH BIRTHDAY PARTY FEB. 17, 2015 Unbelievable that it was 20 years ago today that Blink released the record Cheshire Cat. Recorded in part at Westbeach Recorders in Hollywood, the record was a huge success and launched Blink on their way to super stardom. In a marathon 3 day session at Westbeach Steve recorded 17 songs with the guys. Congrats to the band on the record's 20 anniversary! NEW YEAR KICKS OFF WITH STEVE'S WRITING SESSIONS JAN. 15, 2015 Hell's Half Acre owner and operator Steve Kravac has locked out the studio this month and is wood-shedding new songs for a debut solo release. Targeting twelve songs for a full length album, the material in development runs the gamut of Steve's 90's power pop obsession. Early listens are drawing comparisons to Matthew Sweet, Bob Mould and Sugar, as well as Elvis Costello and Teenage Fanclub. Steve is targeting a late 2015 street date for the release, tentatively entitled "Summer Bliss and Autumn Tears." His own Indie label Porterhouse Records will be releasing the record on vinyl and digitally. THE ACRE ADDS NEW TOYS FOR YOU OCT. 13, 2014 We wanted to let you know about some new arrivals up at Hell's Half Acre that will make your next record sound even better. Firstly, we have acquired the "Little Kahuna" all tube spring reverb and tremolo unit designed and hand-built by punk rock legend and all around nice guy Billy Zoom. Whether front ending your guitar rig, or using it during mixdown while patched into the console this box sounds incredible. We are so excited to have some of Billy's fine work in our room. In the stringed department we have added two new instruments. Our new 1975 Fender Precision Bass with maple neck will bring thundering low end to your project. Assembled from cherry picked vintage parts it is to die for. And if that wasn't enough we just took delivery of a gorgeous 1972 Fender Telecaster also with maple neck. Weighing in at 9 pounds, this guitar is Les Paul heavy and combines the driving low mids of a Paul with the indie rock sparkle of a Tele. Come on up, we've got you covered! IT'S "HEAVEN TONIGHT" UP AT THE ACRE Aug. 13, 2014 John Kastner (Doughboys, Asexuals, All Systems Go, and Steve are currently tracking a version of Cheap Trick's "Heaven Tonight" up at Hell's Half Acre. The song will appear on the forthcoming release "Never Surrender" a tribute to Cheap Trick. Australian based power pop label Zero Hour will be releasing the tribute compilation worldwide and a host of other exciting acts are involved including The Kiss Offs and The Cry. The project is a studio reunion of sorts for John and Steve who's last collaboration bore "Whatever" the debut album from John's band The Doughboys which has been long recognized as a classic Canadian punk rock release. N.O.F.X. "PUNK IN DRUBLIC" 20TH ANNIVERSARY July 19, 2014 July 19th marks the release of NOFX gold record "Punk in Drublic" on Epitaph Records. This was actually one of the first sessions that Steve worked on after arriving in Los Angeles in 1994. "We knew it was going to be big, but we didn't know it was going to be THAT big!" says Steve about the record. The album was produced by Ryan Greene who went on to record a number of releases with the band. Sessions were tracked at Wetstbeach Recorders on Hollywood Boulevard over a period of roughly 21 days. Steve worked as the second engineer and was credited as "Steve Kravic" on the album's liner notes. Congrats NOFX! MID SUMMER AT THE ACRE July 17, 2014 We are having a great summer up in the countryside. The control room has been purring with the sounds of Kieran Strange as we wrap up mixing of her new E.P. Steve co-wrote three of the four tracks with Kieran and they are coming together perfectly. Damn this girl can sing!!! Hollywood's Maxie Dean recently returned to record two more new songs, this in addition to the two tracks they banged out in late spring. The boys obviously like the atmosphere up here! In other news Steve has been playing mad scientist and luthier as he assembles what we hope will be the new studio Fender Precision Bass from a ton of 70's parts he procured. Stay tuned for more haps and feel free to give Hell's Half Acre a like on Facebook here so you can follow our aural adventures up here on the mountain.
